The Madvocate is Vermont’s only statewide newspaper written by and for psychiatric survivors, mad people, and those labeled mentally ill. Created and led by people with lived experience, it blends news, arts, resources, and opinion with a sharp editorial voice rooted in justice and community.
Our mission is to amplify survivor leadership, challenge systems of oppression, and build solidarity across Vermont and beyond. Each quarterly issue features in-depth reporting, cultural critique, profiles, commentary, and a detachable statewide Resource Guide. Regular sections include:
- News & Views: Timely coverage of legislative and policy issues, policing, and state systems.
- Rounds Interrupted: Survivor responses to psychiatric Grand Rounds at UVM.
- Resource Guide: A practical, statewide directory of peer-run, advocacy, and community resources.
- Arts & Voices: Original essays, poetry, and visual art from our community.
- Editorials & Commentary: Survivor-led perspectives on justice, freedom, and liberation.
